Are You Making The Deeper Connection?

Pissarro_ConversationIn generations past, when life was guided and directed by our connection to the natural world, it was very easy to see the Divine everywhere you looked. The winter would come at the end of each year, bringing certain death to the plants in the fields, and sending the animal world into hibernation. But every Spring, renewal and rebirth were a certainty. It was a Divine Spirit that blew its warm breath over the land. There was a sense of Divine Order. We acknowledged the Sacred in the Everyday.

But nowadays, in our very technologically advanced world, we have become somewhat disconnected from the natural world, and consequently, disconnected from our ability to be aware of Spirit’s presence all around us. Belief is optional. Where we once saw grace, we now only see coincidence. We have distanced ourselves from the Divine, and wonder why our soul continually longs for something more.

Many years ago, I read E.M. Forster’s novel, “Howard’s End” for the first time. The epigraph at the beginning of the book was “… only connect.” Forster wrote it in 1910, about three families from different social classes who experience heartache and loss because of their inability to connect with each other, and with what is true for themselves.

The power of that epigraph has stayed with me through the years. For me, it was more than just connecting as a society, or a family. It was about making the deeper connection to the Unseen. It is the power of connection, not only with each other, but with our innermost selves, and most importantly, with the Divine that reminds us of our truest nature, that we belong to something much larger than ourselves.

As we begin the journey through the festivities of the Christmas season, I invite you to make the decision to invite connection with the Divine into your experience. The desire to connect is at the heart of our longing. It’s when you open yourself up to creating deep and rich relationships that you connect with the Divine spark within others. Then, complete the circle of connection as you draw Spirit into your heart and, in turn, flow it out.

There are many ways you can practice Connection. There are many ways to experience the Sacred in the Everyday. You can feel connected through spiritual practices like prayer, meditation, or devotions. You can experience it when you share your time, make a meal, read a story to a child, love your partner, or speak a kind word to a stranger. Simply flow your heart energy to the unsuspecting all around you. Gifts of the Spirit.

The opportunities are as endless as your ideas. What ways will you choose to connect? Share your ideas in the comments below so we can begin to connect more deeply with each other.

  1. Dear Paula,

Your post really spoke to me. I like to think I am always connecting with the Divine, but what you wrote made me think that perhaps I am on autopilot. I want to deepen my connection.

    Warmly,
    Mary Ann Pine
