Transformation and Work: Making the Connection

Today I have the great pleasure of being the host on Day 7 of the Virtual Blog Tour for Healing the Corporate World by author Maria Gamb.

Written by former Fortune 500 executive, Maria Gamb, who spent more than 20 years trailblazing businesses valued at upwards of $100 million, Healing the Corporate World is a cutting-edge book examining the deep, and usually unspoken, ailment of the modern corporate world, offering solutions for healing at a personal, financial and even spiritual level. By showing the reader “the four cycles of transformational leadership”, Maria provides business leaders, from solo entrepreneurs to corporate senior executives, practical answers on how to transform their organizations from the inside out, and become “Change Agents”, consciously creating their own reality.

Yesterday, Maria visited Tom King at www.growitforward.com . For today’s stop on the tour, I decided to ask Maria some questions about how we can make the connection between transformation and our work or workplace, as well as how we as women can step more fully into the role we have as a leader, in all its many variations.

Paula: Maria, many of our readers are experiencing life transitions as the catalyst for deep and profound transformation.  Can they avoid the chaos that often comes with transition?  Is there such a thing as productive chaos?
Maria: All chaos is actually productive.  I know that may be difficult to digest but here’s what’s important to know about chaos.  It is often times a result of something being out of alignment with the core principles of a group, which means, things get really crazy and harried in order to facilitate a change.  Not always, but many times it has to get really painful first before humans will make any change.  Why? Because we’re human.  As long as we’re comfortable there’s no reason to change. Chaos is that pain being brought to the surface until you just can’t ignore it anymore and have to make some new decision and take a new direction.  Sometimes that’s a major life change or a sequence of small changes that create a major shift.  Chaos is a catalyst to bring new, better and stronger evolutions in business (and in our personal lives) into the world. It’s the mechanism that causes us to say “ok, enough, now I’ll do this differently” or “now I’m ready to make an adjustment I’ve been putting off.”

Paula: Many women are realizing they want to contribute in meaningful ways through their work, but they don’t describe themselves as a leader.  How do you define the new role of “leaders” in the world today?
Maria: To quote John Quincy Adams “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  When you think about being a leader in these terms then it becomes clearer that we all are leaders in some way; as a mother, a co-worker, a manager or simply someone in the community.  Leaders take many forms and usually the most influential leaders are the ones without the big fancy titles.  Women in particular under value this aspect of themselves.

Paula: In your book, you talk about honoring your path, your purpose and spiritual nature.  Can you say more about how this fits with work and business?
Maria: People often struggle to integrate all these aspects into their working environment.  However, I think the misconception is that if you are a spiritual person and want to bring that into the workplace you have to make some formal statement.  The most powerful way to express yourself and your purpose is by your actions, not merely your words. This is the art of “being” that authentic person rather being someone others believe you should or ought to be.

Here’s the practical application – because it’s got to be something you can express in a very tangible way.  Look at how you interact with others.  What are your rules of engagement?  What are the values by which you conduct yourself?  This is not a moralistic question as much as it is about your own value system.  Values are based in 3 grounding principles – they are rooted in love – the care of others, compassion – the connection to others and acceptance – the engagement of others.  Most people haven’t considered it this way, but it is so. If you want to integrate this spiritual side of yourself use these 3 principles as your guiding force in how you operate in the world.  When you do so, your path naturally opens up for you.  Business is merely another vehicle.

Paula: As entrepreneurs and creatives, we’ve been taught that competition is the way to get ahead and be successful in our businesses. How can we overcome this mindset and learn to collaborate more?
Maria: This is a great question Paula!  I think it’s important to really define what being competitive means and where it stems from.  Many believe that being competitive is fighting for their piece of the pie, to “get” whatever it is: a sale, a promotion, advancement or increase in income, before anyone else can.  This is a mindset of lack.  It is the mindset of the ego that says that there isn’t enough to go around.  What you may see with your own eyes is all that there really is.  However, the Universe is infinite and there is always enough.  Now some will say that’s not true.  I’ve had clients and workshop participants stomp their foot and wave their hands dramatically insisting this isn’t true.  But here’s what most people forget.  That thing that you’re competing for may not be the right thing for you or that there is something bigger and better on the horizon for you. You must be willing to be open to it rather than attached to what you think the outcome “must” be.
